Meet Renée Loiz, the celebrity makeup artist and beauty expert, who created Qunita Brunson's flawless Emmys look. Here she talks Prince, why she loves makeup and the beauty items no woman should be without.
How did your career begin in beauty? Was it a calling?
As a young child I always had an interest in fashion and beauty. My mom, grandma, and aunts were very into fashion and always dressed to a t. They didn’t wear makeup but were skincare sticklers and made sure their hair was always done. When I was around 10 a friend of my mothers was visiting and she let me know she used to do makeup for Prince. I think that became imbedded in me and stayed with me throughout my teenage years. When I was around 21 I started working for Mac and never looked back.
Who was your first celebrity client?
Before I started working with celebs I used to do a lot of kids advertising shoots and many of those kids became big actors and actresses so I would say first celeb clients were Miya Cech (always be my maybe), Bella Bowman (the Underground Railroad), Akira Akbar (captain marvel). I’ve been working with these girls since they were 5 and did their first red carpet events!
What do you love most about doing makeup?
I love the way makeup makes people feel. The look they give me after seeing themselves in the mirror is priceless. It’s the soft smile and confidence I see in them that keeps me going.
Can you tell us a memorable shoot moment?
Shooting with Essence magazine (with client Quinta Brunson) was a major highlight in my career.
Tips for maintaining a youthful appearance and great skin?
Making sure to cleanse your skin day and night. Use sunscreen daily and exfoliate and use a detox mask once a week. This helps to get rid of dirt and imputes, smoothes the skin's texture, and allows skin to replenish itself.
What are the most common mistakes people make with makeup?
Starting off with a heavy hand or applying too much makeup and then having to remove the excess makeup. Also not having a proper and consistent skincare routine affects how your makeup looks.
